In order to successfully treat a dog, it is very important that it is given a thorough examination by a veterinarian. If only the symptoms are treated and not the cause, the symptoms usually come back after a while and all the effort has done no good. Often times, symptoms are triggered by fleas and other parasites, fungi, bacteria, and injuries. Feed intolerance, allergies or allergens from the environment (e.g. pollen count) are the cause less frequently. Food allergies are usually an overreaction of the immune system to certain proteins in the food. In the case of the more common feed intolerances, however, the immune system is not involved. The symptoms of a food allergy are often indistinguishable from those of a food intolerance – these can manifest themselves in the form of skin problems, permanently inflamed ears or impaired digestion – e.g. diarrhea. Medicines often bring relief, but – as long as the cause is not eliminated – they cannot bring about permanent freedom from symptoms.
