Vitamin A is a (water-insoluble) vitamin for birds that do not (or insufficiently) produce vitamin A themselves, such as parakeets, parrots, cockatoos and canaries (white recessive). In nature, curved bills often eat vitamin A rich foods. Seeds for crooked beaks usually contain too little vitamin A, which means that addition to the diet is necessary. Recessive white canaries cannot convert vitamin A from provitamin A, so adding it to the diet is necessary.
Signs that indicate vitamin A deficiency
Canaries (especially recessive white canaries)
poor breeding results
Parakeets, parrots and cockatoos
stuffy nose and swollen upper eyelids often accompanied by lacrimation, in severe cases adhesion of the eyelids
swellings between and behind the lower jaw branches (indicating swollen salivary glands)
damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat and respiratory tract.
